Several years ago, I attended a class taught by and well-known homemaking guru, Daryl Hoole. One of her many bits of advice was to do "Something that Stays Done" every day. I have followed this advice off and on, but want to make it a habit in 2011!

P.S. To see the blog that inspired me to get started and to see more great ideas of things to get done, check out dirtylittlesecrets2010.blogspot.com. Thanks, Becky!

A reminder for the husband

This something is to remind the husband who is waiting for him at home when he is up on Capitol Hill.
I bought this cool frame and Michael's,
resized, printed, and trimmed the pictures, and put them in.
I told him that he could keep it in his new office or on his desk on the House floor.
It looks better without the black circles.
If you know us, you already know what we look like.
If you don't know us, you can use your imagination!

Double the mess, double the fun!

The 2-year-olds' car seats were long overdue for some attention.
I took them out of the car, washed the covers, and put them back together.
I had to move the straps up on both of them.
For the boy because he's getting bigger.
For the girl because she gets her arms out of the straps.
Silly girl, she can't crawl or walk yet, but she can Houdini out of her car seat in seconds!

STSD has a new author (sort of)!

My 9-year-old is pretty interested in this blog.
When he sees me working hard, he often asks if I'm going to put it on my blog.
One of his jobs is to clean the family room.
The other day, when he was going to clean it,
he stopped, grabbed the camera, and snapped a quick before picture.
He came and showed me the before and after pictures when he was finished.
He said, "Look, everything disappeared!"
That is something that won't stay done very long, but I happy to have such a cute follower!

The Newspaper Basket

With the number of newspapers I get,
the stack gets deep pretty fast.
(I get one one every day except Sunday, when I get four!)
We have a wood burning fireplace that heats the whole house
on days when there is no inversion.
I recycled all of the ads and made firelogs out of the rest of the papers.
Not only did I get something done,
I reused the newspapers (and the rubber bands that come on them)
and will use them to keep me warm!

The Science Fair

This little something was completed pretty close to tomorrow.
The 14-year-old did a project on purifying water.
Doesn't the board look great?
He won the "Grand Champion" at the sixth grade science fair.
I told him it was because of the cool letters.
(He used my Cricut and other scrapbooking supplies to make them.)
Looks like he'll win with this one too!
Ha! Ha!

The Office - Day Five

Will this ever end?
I finished the bookshelf today.
I sorted through every bin.
My recycle can is getting pretty full.
Before...

After...
Don't you just love the sunlight that comes from the south windows in this room?
It's always warm and sunny in there.
It makes me happy!
Now that it's almost clean, it makes me even more happy!

The Office - Day Four

Another day in the office.
Today it was the top of the bookshelf.
The pictures show some undone somethings so just look at the top of the shelf;).
Before...
After...

The Office - Day Three

The stuff in this room is so deep that I could spend a month in here!
I was able to go through all of my FHE lessons and get them alphabetized and organized.

Here's one of the file drawers before...

And after...

Doesn't look too much different, but things are much easier to find.
The 12-year-old needed to discuss the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and substance abuse
with his family for a merit badge.
I told him to go open the drawer and find the Word of Wisdom folder.
He did our FHE tonight.
I got more than just an organized drawer out of this something!

The Office - Day Two

I did more organizing in the office today.
The biggest improvement was made when I took the cords from the old computer and got rid of them.
The black cords are from the old fish tank that is still running.
When it's gone, I am going to put the single Apple computer cord through the wall.
That something has been talked about for over two years.
Hopefully the fish tank will leave soon so I can do it!

A couple of little somethings...

My first somethings was shredding a 8 inch stack of papers in the office.
They made it all the way out to the recycle can.
Sorry, no picture of my black and gray paper shredder.

My second something was my dresser.
That something has been waiting for months to be done.
According to the alarm clock, it only took me 14 minutes to clear it off.
The husband says that he really likes my blog.
I'm not sure what to think of that.
I just smiled and told him that he should start a blog just like it and we could get twice as much done.
;-)
I'm still waiting!

The Office - Day One

 The office needs an overhaul.
(Steve calls it the craft room.  I call it the office.  Craft room makes him think that it's all my craft stuff.  The office is full of everybody's stuff.  Not just my craft stuff.)

Each of us has our own bin except for the three youngest.
  They all three share one.
It was overflowing so I started by cleaning it out.

Here is the new and improved and much cleaner wrapping corner.

This is part of the room.
The two 2-year-olds love the office.
They can make it a huge mess in no time.

This something will last me a few days.

Something NOT fun!

This is something that I didn't ever want to have to do.
The bedroom in the basement got water in it over Christmas break.
We got rid of the carpet and pad.
When it started to get warm, it got wet again.
Today I found the source of the water.
Water was coming in through the hole that the main water pipe comes into the house through.
The leak is right below the opening that was already in the wall to access the main water valve.
Figures!
Of course, the water wasn't coming in near the puddle, so we removed quite a bit of sheetrock.
We also found out that it has happened before because the insulation was trimmed in some areas
and note even there in others.
The bright spot in all of this is that my boys will have a warmer room when we get it put back together.
My favorite handyman, Himmler, helped me locate it.
We have a waterproofing company coming tomorrow to fix it.
I've been wanting to paint this room.
I guess now is a good time to do just that.

I can think of a lot of somethings that this room is going to create!

Kitchen - Day Six

This is the something I started out with today.
I got this hot spot cleared off and paid a bunch of bills that were hiding.
 Then I just kept going!
Here are a few of the before and after pictures from the kitchen.

The kitchen is almost done.
I really went to town today on the cupboards and drawers.
I got rid of lots of knives, plastic spoons, a pitcher, a waffle maker, a mini-crock pot, lots of lids, etc.
I even ended up with an empty drawer.
Ahhh, the possibilities!

P.S.  I'm going to figure out how to turn the pictures the right way and fix the spacing one of these days!

Kitchen - Day Five

The 9-year-old helped me decide which something I would do today.
When he opened the freezer to get his daily frozen waffle out, this is what happened.
I took his picture and told him that I knew what I was going to blog about today!
I cleaned out the fridge and both freezers.
